Having Darcie as our doula for the birth of our son gave us strength and courage. I have heard the metaphor that a doula is like a having a guide for your first trek up Mt. Everest, and that is so true. Darcie made everything that could have been scary and uncertain seem normal and doable.
The day we had waited our whole life for, that felt like it would never really come, we finally put our bags in the car and drove to the hospital to be induced. We couldn’t believe we would be coming home with a baby. We were both so nervous, but we met Darcie at the hospital and she put us at ease right away. She was still there at 2:30 am when my contractions started, in her scrubs and with a big smile on her face. She had a bumpy vanilla smelling ball which really helped with the pain as I rubbed it under my hand with each contraction. We would never have thought of that! She also led me in walking, bouncing on the birth ball, sitting in the jacuzzi tub, and eating ice chips. She made a drink with cranberry juice and Sprite which was the only thing I could keep down. Darcie was with me the WHOLE time, 21 hours all together, which allowed my husband to take breaks. She was peppy and positive through it all. She held me while I breathed and helped me stay on top of the contractions, and later she was my cheerleader when it was time to push. She took pictures to document our son coming into the world, his first breaths and first squeeze of his daddy’s finger.
Even after we had our baby home Darcie continued to support me by offering advice on breast feeding over the phone, coming to visit us and being the only one brave enough to trim his little fingernails when we were too scared to try. And when I went to visit her for a weigh-in at the hospital she was the first person to make our baby laugh! We can’t praise Darcie highly enough, being a doula is truly her calling, and we were so lucky to have her by our side. Thank you Darcie!
